Luis Serpa is a prominent gallery owner and curator based in Lisbon, playing an important role in changing the perspective of visual arts throughout Portugal. On Friday 8th April, Serpa will present an open class entitled “Fotografia & Literatura: Um Olhar Sobre o Feminino” analysing the work of female artists and representations of female protagonists in literature, as part of the project “Pós-Graduação: Fotografia, Projecto e Arte Contemporânea” organised by Atelier de Lisboa and IPA school.

From the narrative of Filipe Martins, author of renowned book “La donna è mobile”, Luis Serpa built a discourse based on the structure of this fictional book, discussing the main protagonist, a reputable contemporary photographer and her alter ego, Parcifal the “innocent fool”.

The talk will incorporate references to works such as the novels “Portrait of a Lady” by Henry James and “Madame Bovary” by Flaubert, while focusing on the work of artist, director and playwright Robert Wilson, opera composer Richard Wagner and running through his own career as a gallery and exhibition commissioner to analyse photography of female artists with whom he worked over the last thirty years; Cindy Sherman, Lorna Simpson, Michele Sylvander and Claudia Fischer, without forgetting the Portuguese; Graça Pereira Coutinho, Graça Sarsfield or Cristina Ataíde (among others), taking a look into the feminine vision, including that of a “man-who-likes-women” and also the relationship of “self against other”.

The class is open to the public with free entry and will take place at 21:00 at IPA (Instituto Superior Autonomo de Estudos Politecnicos):

Rua da Boavista, 67, Lisboa (Santos/Cais do Sodré)
