CABINET OF CURIOSITIES: GALERIA LUIS SERPA PROJECTOS, LISBON

Cristina Inglesias “Sem Título”, 1984, Acrylic on paper, 50 x 44cm

Paying homage to the “Chambers of Wonder” or “Cabinets of Curiosity” of the European age of exploration, the latest exhibition ‘Gabinete de Curiosidades’ at Galeria Luis Serpa in Lisbon displays an assortment of unseen works from a variety of foreign and Portuguese artists who have regularly contributed to the gallery over the past years; CRISTINA INGLESIAS, PEDRO CALAPEZ, JULIÃO SARMENTO, JUAN MUÑOZ, PEDRO PROENÇA, PEDROCABINET CABRITA REIS, ANDREA MEDJESI-JONES, MIGUEL NAVAS, HAMISH FULTON, NUNO CERA, SUSANNE THEMLITZ, MICHAEL BIBERSTEIN, FERNANDO CALHAU, ROBERTO BARNI, JOSÉ MARIA SICÍLIA, DANIEL BLAUFUKS, JOÂO BISCAINHO, ÂNGELO DE SOUSA, MICHELANGELO PISTOLETTO, ALBERTO CARNEIRO.

Each of the small pieces of artwork on display reveal great detail and importance in their creation, some totally unexpected like the exotic treasures that were once kept guarded in old “Cabinets of Curiosity” collections. The result of this exhibition is a shared journey through the collective memory and universe of the Luis Serpa Gallery…

Some Tuesdays over the course of the exhibition will be dedicated to the Luis Serpa ‘Talks Around the Table’ allowing an informal meeting with creators over a relaxed end-of-the-day beverage. The exhibition is running until the 29th October 2011 (closed throughout August).
