The tribe we choose to become

Shot on the riverside steps of the Champalimaud Foundation, ZOOT and ETIC joined forces to showcase a futuristic collection. ETIC’s final-year Fashion Design students using deadstock materials from the Swedish fishing-gear brand Grundéns, this capsule highlights the urgency of putting sustainable practices into action.

In a world increasingly shaped by climate instability, this collection of upcycled fishing gear reads almost like a prophecy. Using surplus materials from Grundéns — a brand founded in 1926 in Sweden to protect fishermen from the brutality of the North Sea — ETIC’s students, led by professor Luís Emilio, reinterpret functional garments for a generation facing a different kind of storm: the climate crisis.
In Golding’s Lord of the Flies (1954), a group of boys is stranded on an island where the collapse of structure forces them into primal survival. The island becomes both their refuge and their threat. Today, our own planet — once perceived as stable — is shifting beneath us, becoming a place we must now learn to inhabit differently.
The question becomes: What kind of tribe do we want to be on it?
Photographed by Bárbara Martons along the edge of the Tejo, on the sculptural steps of the Champalimaud Foundation — a space dedicated to pioneering scientific research — the story evokes a surreal near-future landscape. The young creative team shapes the models, a full Da Banda cast, into a tribe armoured with waterproof materials, sculptural silhouettes and protective layers.
In this sense, the collection becomes a counter-myth to Golding’s pessimism — a vision of young people who, when confronted with an uncertain future, respond not with chaos, but with responsibility, care and a commitment to sustainability.
A tribe, yes — but one that protects rather than destroys.
One that adapts, collaborates and transforms.
