Forms follows Function

Beauty begins with ideas that rethink, disrupt, and redefine expression. In the course finale, photographed by Nuno Beja, students were challenged to rethink beauty through the lens of Bauhaus. Rooted in the principle that function defines form, they stripped make-up back to structure, geometry, and intention, using colour, line, and texture as tools of design — pushing beauty beyond trends and into modern expression.

Born in 1919 in Weimar, Germany, as both an art school and a radical design philosophy, Bauhaus celebrates clean lines, geometric abstraction, purposeful colour, and the seamless fusion of art with everyday life. Founded by Walter Gropius, and later shaped by figures such as Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and László Moholy-Nagy, the movement transformed art, design, and architecture worldwide.
For this final make-up exercise, Antonia Rosa and photographer Nuno Beja invited students to translate Bauhaus principles into beauty, exploring structure, contrast, and colour theory. The result is a bold exploration where form, function, and artistry meet in striking simplicity.
Artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, László Moholy-Nagy, and Carl Buchhrister were references in the definition of light and in the design of three possible environments—games of geometric shapes, contrast, and light and dark. The light, together with a spotlight, allowed for the intensification of colors and the use of color spots, as well as facilitating the creation of defined areas of light/shadow, brightness/darkness.
