I met Bia in the iconic music video for the song “Sentir Saudade”. I felt an intense emotion, and that small woman suddenly became enormous and mesmerizing. Bia’s beauty is physical, but it transcends any person when she starts to sing. We became friends and have a great admiration for each other. She inspires any artist, and Bia proved to be willing for a photoshoot I envisioned. And here we have the result.

In this editorial, we introduce Bia Caboz, a talented Portuguese singer and songwriter who embraces her cultural roots and proudly represents her homeland wherever she goes. Displaying her vulnerability and passion through her music, Bia explains that her songs, writing and choices as an artist are the reflection of who she is as a person.
Bia’s roots permeate her music. From the enchanting island of Madeira, she is inspired by the rich tradition of music, cuisine, embroidery and other cultural touchstones of her home. Today, Bia is employing a new approach to traditional Portuguese music, fusing fado with various other styles like techno to create a fresh and captivating sound. Of her most recent collaboration with Portuguese DJ and producer Kura, Bia says,
I sought out Kura with the intention of starting this new path of mine with techno as my first fusion style. It was very important to choose the right person so that my identity would be respected. Everything went exactly as I always imagined, and I couldn’t be happier.

With support from her team, Antonia brought her make-up vision to life with Bia as the vivid canvas, showcasing metallic details that bring a luminous touch to the atmosphere of the photoshoot. Through Bia and Antonia’s collaboration, this editorial gets to the soul of the artist. Each frame captured by renowned Portuguese photograher Sergio Rosario shows Bia’s expressive individuality, inviting viewers to be captivated by her presence just as Antonia was.

ZOOT: How would you describe the essence of who you are as an individual and artist?
Bia Caboz: It is all very clear in my songs, I am vulnerable and driven by passion, what I sing, what I write, and the sounds I choose are the synthesis of who I am as a human being, so there is not an artist Bia and Bia Dona Graça’s daugther , I am the same person. I know that today there are many fabricated artists. I also know that having a character maybe makes things a little easier, but since I can’t act any other way I am willing to pay the price of being me.
ZOOT: Earlier in your career you performed under the name Beatriz Silva. Can you tell us about the switch to the stage name Bia Caboz?
Bia: The transition from Beatriz Silva to Bia Caboz was a personal and artistic choice. Caboz is my maternal grandfather’s last name. I grew up hearing all my aunts, who are very strong women, defend the name with pride. (I just got emotional writing this answer) They were a very poor family 13 children, 11 women and 2 men, they were very hungry and most of the time went to school barefoot, for that reason the last name Caboz was used in a pejorative way, my mother didn’t put it in my identity with fear that I would be made fun of like they were.
Being able to bring Caboz into the artistic world for me is a plot twist, because I grew up with the desire to have that name because I was proud of the strong and cheerful personality of all of them! One of the phrases that made me vain the most was when one of them would look at my mother and say of me “esta é caboz pelas portas”—meaning there was no doubt I was a real Caboz, through and through.
Another of the symbologies is that my grandfather was illiterate, but had an incredible ear for music, played harmonica accordion and guitar, and loved to get my aunts to sing while he played! If there is a musical gene, it is from him that I inherited it!
ZOOT: Coming from Ilha da Madeira, what inspiration do you draw from your cultural heritage?
Bia: The island of Madeira despite being a “pearl” in the ocean has a very rich cultural heritage that includes musical traditions, food, drink, embroidery, wickerwork… and above all a huge weight in my educational construction, wood has a strong sense of community.
Inevitably wood is present in everything I do on an artistic level, I have seen embroidered wood several times and feel that in this way I carry with me the flag of my home. the Bailinho is present in all my performances and in my storehouse of inspiration for future projects.
I had the opportunity to make the last video-clip in a Madeiran bar here in Lisbon, the whole crew on set followed the recordings with a taste of our tangerine poncha which is my favorite haha. Madeira will be present in all my paths, directly or indirectly, that’s where I come from, that’s where I started my career and I will take it with pride wherever I go.
To live on the island is to unconsciously enjoy what it gives you, when you leave it is when you realize the importance of what you were experiencing!
“É preciso sair da ilha para ver a ilha”
ZOOT: Your music showcases a beautiful fusion of fado with various music styles. What led to this fusion, and how do you feel it enhances your creative expression?
Bia: I never stay in one place for very long, I have lived in London, Madeira, Brazil, spent long periods in Switzerland, and currently live in Lisbon. This experience has brought me into contact with people from cultures completely different in their way of thinking, speaking, listening. I feel happy for having the opportunity to accumulate different cultures in my personal construction, and consequently new sounds are appearing on this path.
Techno is only the first fusion, the first chapter of this autobiography that I intend to tell about everything I have learned. My goal is to always sing with a fado soul and to add everything that came my way to that language, fado is implicit in so many things, like the way lyrics are written and divided, the way melody is created, even the way production is conducted. I want to take our cultural language to fields never before seeded, like an electronic festival, for example, this will give an opportunity not only for the Portuguese language to be heard around the world, but also for younger audiences to be proud of listening to fado!
I wrote a fado for [the video] game Valorant, which is played all over the world, and I thought it would be important to record it in a traditional way, portuguese guitar, viola and bass. Because this younger generation would be influenced to look at this composition differently, probably if they had heard “Casa de vidro” on tv, many would have changed the channel for not identifying with the style. I believe that the way music is introduced in our lives defines the openness to feed that sound or not.
ZOOT: Music has always been recognized as a powerful form of storytelling. What stories do you want to tell in your music?
Bia: I have written a lot about personal experiences that I believe other people can relate to. This first one, “Sentir Saudade” [a collaboration with Kura], although it is a reflection and has a peculiar writing, also came from a personal experience.
I can reveal that two days before I went to the studio with Kura, I experienced a very personal moment on the Avenida da Liberdade—the Avenue of Freedom—where I sat for hours on one of the benches on the sidewalk. As a backdrop I had the street and the stones of our Portuguese sidewalk and the look of someone who made me reflect on that freedom to feel. It was a remarkable moment that I missed as soon as I got back home with everything stored in my chest.
ZOOT: Can you explain “saudade” to our non-Portuguese readers? What does it mean to you personally?
Bia: The word “saudade” only exists in the Portuguese language. The translation in the dictionary is “missing” or “longing”. It’s not entirely wrong. “Saudade” is indeed kind of like longing or missing, but not just that!
Both words, “missing” and “saudade”, reveal the absence of something or someone… The difference is that “missing” is born from logic… it is generated by the brain, whereas “saudade” is born in the heart! If it were a mathematical equation, it would be:
Saudade = Missing + Affection x 2.
ZOOT: How do you connect with listeners through your music?
Bia: With the truth. It is on it that I base myself; it is on it that I feed; and it is through it that I intend to reach what is most honest in each person’s heart.
ZOOT: What is your personal beauty philosophy? How do you balance the pursuit of aesthetics with the importance of feeling comfortable in your own skin?
Bia: For me beauty is connected to authenticity. I believe that true beauty lies in confidence, genuine expression and valuing who you are as an individual.
I grew up without much praise for beauty, used to hear close people being praised more. I had it in my heart that I was not born to be beautiful but to attract people in another way, with my personality and musicality. But it was important to find a healthy balance between caring about external appearance and cultivating a positive connection with my own identity. Not staying in that place of acceptance helped me a lot in my self-confidence, today being more careful with my appearance I feel a much more secure woman.
ZOOT: What are some of your essential beauty rituals, like your favorite products, perfumes or practices?
Bia: Perfume is for me a super important part of my daily routine, I can’t leave home without perfume. It’s that scent that will mark the olfactory memory of whoever meets me.I have been wearing the same one for years, Dolce & Gabbana The One, I am very picky about perfumes and usually don’t buy to try it, it has to be someone close to introduce me to the scent.
On a routine perfume is the product I am most loyal to, I don’t use specific products and I am always trying new things. I think it’s important at the makeup level to always use a good foundation, but otherwise I really like to try products that I bring from other countries.
ZOOT: How does it feel to be the muse for this editorial?
Bia: Being the source of inspiration behind a creative concept is a unique and exciting experience. Antónia entered my life during the filming of my first music video, and it was a very significant day for me. We immediately had a strong connection that made that day even more memorable.
Working on a project like this as a result of that first encounter is very symbolic to me. Everything flowed in a very genuine way, with everyone on the same wavelength. I felt like staying in that ZOOT universe for a few more hours, connecting through the gaze of Antónia and the rest of the team. I felt like I was discovering a side of myself that I had never sought before, it was truly special.
ZOOT: Who are the artists or creatives who you have as your own muses? How have they inspired you?
Bia: It is incredibly motivating to see an artist as mature as Antónia being inspired and enchanted by my art. Seeing her so excited on set made me truly feel like a muse.
I also have my own muses, of course. Artistically, Amy Winehouse was my first major influence. It was through her that I discovered my voice. Another artist who inspires me is Beyoncé, someone who reaches unreachable heights. And then there’s the most important muse of all, my Fado Godmother, Ana Moura. Ana inspires me not only artistically but also as a role model of personality. She has an admirable approach to life, both personally and professionally, that is truly inspiring for those who are close to her and even for those who are not.
I learned things from Ana even before I met her. Humility is one of them. Nowadays, I am fortunate enough to share all my achievements with her and seek her opinion in moments of doubt, which is one of the few opinions that truly matter in my life. I believe that one of the most important choices in life is to carefully choose the people from whom we seek opinions because they are part of our growth. Having Ana as part of my life makes me feel incredibly lucky.
ZOOT: What new artistic ventures or collaborations can we look forward to from you?
Bia: I have just finished recording the next music video, outside of Portugal, but I can already reveal that Antónia was involved in the makeup concept, even though she couldn’t be there in person! The song is called “VAI VAGUEAR” and it was produced by Young Max. I was in Rio de Janeiro, and he was in London when we first contacted each other.
Max was a great find! He is a very special person. He was the first music producer who looked at me and wanted to preserve my identity, helping me bring to life the ideas I had kept for years, without any fear. I feel happy about what is coming up ahead!

ZOOT: Como você definiria Bia Caboz e a essência do que você é como indivíduo e artista?
Bia Caboz: Estará tudo muito claro nas minhas músicas, sou vulnerável e movida a paixões, o que eu canto, o que escrevo e as sonoridades que escolho são a síntese do que eu sou como ser humano, logo não existe uma Bia artista e uma Bia filha da Dona Graça, eu sou a mesma pessoa.
Sei que hoje há muitos artistas fabricados. Também sei que ter uma personagem talvez facilita um pouco as coisas, mas como não consigo agir de outra forma estou disposta a pagar o preço de ser eu.
ZOOT: No início da sua carreira, você se apresentava com o nome Beatriz Silva. Como foi a transição de se apresentar como Beatriz Silva para adotar o nome artístico Bia Caboz? O que motivou essa mudança e como ela afetou sua carreira?
Bia: A transição de Beatriz Silva para Bia Caboz foi uma escolha pessoal e artística. Caboz é o sobrenome do meu avô materno, cresci a ouvir todas as minhas tias, que são mulheres muito fortes, a defender o nome com orgulho. (Acabei de me emocionar a escrever esta resposta)
Eram uma família muito pobre 13 filhos, 11 mulheres e 2 homens. Passaram muita fome e na maior parte das vezes iam para a escola descalços por essa razão o sobrenome Caboz era usado de forma pejorativa, a minha mãe não o colocou na minha identidade com medo que eu fosse gozada como elas eram. Pude trazer o Caboz para o mundo artístico para mim é um plot twist, porque eu cresci com o desejo de ter esse nome por ter orgulho na personalidade forte e alegre de todas elas! Uma das frases que mais me deixava vaidosa era quando alguma delas olhava para a minha mãe e dizia “esta (eu) é caboz pelas portas”, que não havia dúvida que eu era uma verdadeira Caboz!
Outra das simbologias é que o meu avô era analfabeto, mas tinha um ouvido incrível para a música, tocava harmônica acordeão e viola, e adorava colocar as minhas tias a cantar enquanto ele tocava!
Se existe um gene musical, foi dele que eu herdei!
ZOOT: Vindo da Ilha da Madeira, de que inspiração você se alimenta da sua herança cultural? Você pode compartilhar aspectos específicos ou experiências da sua cidade natal que influenciam sua expressão artística?
Bia: A Ilha da Madeira apesar de ser uma “pérola” no oceano tem uma herança cultural muito rica que inclui tradições musicais, comida bebida, o bordado dos vimes… e acima de tudo um peso enorme na minha construção educativa, a madeira tem um forte senso de comunidade.
Inevitavelmente a madeira está presente em tudo o que eu faço a nível artístico, visto várias vezes bordado madeira sinto que dessa forma carrego comigo a bandeira da minha casa.
O Bailinho está presente em todas as minhas atuações e no meu armazém de inspiração para projectos futuros. Tive oportunidade de fazer o último vídeo-clip no num bar madeirense aqui em Lisboa, toda a equipe no set acompanhou as gravações com gostinho da nossa poncha de tangerina que é a minha favorita haha. A madeira estará presente em todo o meu percurso de forma direta ou indireta, é de lá que eu venho, foi lá que comecei a minha carreira e é com vaidade que a levarei para onde for.
ZOOT: Sua música apresenta uma fusão do fado com diversos estilos musicais, criando um som único e cativante. O que levou a essa fusão de estilos? Como você sente que essa combinação de gêneros aprimora sua arte e expressão autêntica?
Bia: Eu nunca fico muito tempo no mesmo lugar, Já vivi em Londres, na Madeira, no Brasil, passei grandes temporadas na Suíça e vivo atualmente em Lisboa essa experiência fez com que eu estivesse em contacto com pessoas de culturas completamente diferentes na sua forma de pensar, falar, ouvir…
Confesso que me sinto feliz por ter a oportunidade de acumular culturas distintas na minha construção pessoal. E consequentemente novas sonoridades vão aparecendo nesse caminho. O techno é só a primeira fusão, o primeiro capítulo desta autobiografia que pretendo contar sobre tudo o que aprendi.
O meu objectivo é cantar sempre com alma fadista e somar tudo o que me apareceu no caminho a essa linguagem, o fado está implícito em tanta coisa, como por exemplo na forma como a letra é escrita e dividida, na forma como a melodia é criada, até mesmo na forma como a produção é conduzida, quero levar a nossa linguagem cultural a campos nunca antes semeados, como por exemplo a um festival de electrónica, isso dará oportunidade não só da língua portuguesa ser ouvida pelo mundo, como de públicos mais jovens terem orgulho de ouvir fado!
Escrevi um fado para um jogo de tiros, Valorant, é jogado no mundo inteiro, e achei que seria importante gravar de forma tradicional, guitarra portuguesa, viola e baixo. Porque essa geração mais jovem seria influenciada a olhar para essa composição de maneira diferente, provavelmente se tivessem ouvido a “casa de vidro” na tv, muitos teriam trocado o canal por não se identificarem com o estilo. Acredito que a forma como a música é introduzida na nossa vida define a abertura para alimentarmos ou não aquela sonoridade.
ZOOT: A música sempre foi reconhecida como uma forma poderosa de contar histórias. Quais histórias você deseja contar em sua música?
Bia: Tenho escrito muito sobre vivências pessoais das quais acredito que outras pessoas possam se identificar.
Esta primeira “sentir saudade” apesar de ser uma reflexão e ter uma escrita peculiar surgiu também de uma vivência pessoal.
Posso revelar que dois dias antes de eu ir a estúdio com o Kura, vivi um momento muito pessoal na avenida da liberdade onde tive horas sentada num dos bancos do passeio. Como cenário tinha a rua, e as pedras da nossa calçada portuguesa e o olhar de alguém que me fez reflectir sobre essa liberdade para sentir. Foi um momento marcante do qual senti saudades logo que voltei a casa com tudo guardado no peito.
ZOOT: Sua música com Kura, “Sentir Saudade”, explora o conceito de “saudade”. Você pode explicar “saudade” para nossos leitores não lusófonos? O que “saudade” significa para você pessoalmente?
Bia: A palavra saudade é nossa só existe na língua portuguesa… A tradução no dicionário é “FALTA”. Não é de todo errado… a saudade é também uma falta, mas não só! Ambas as palavras: FALTA e SAUDADE revelam a AUSÊNCIA de algo ou alguém… A diferença é que a FALTA nasce da lógica… é gerada pelo cérebro, já a SAUDADE nasce no coração!
Se fosse uma equação matemática seria:
SAUDADE = FALTA + AFETO x 2
ZOOT: Tendo o poder de conectar pessoas e evocar emoções profundas com a música, como você espera que sua música ressoe com os ouvintes e impacte suas vidas? Como você se conecta com os ouvintes?
Bia: Com a verdade, é nela que me fundamento é dela que me alimento e é através dela que pretendo chegar ao que há de mais honesto no coração de cada um.
ZOOT: Qual é a sua filosofia pessoal em relação à beleza? Como você equilibra a busca pela estética com a importância de se sentir confortável em sua própria pele?
Bia: Para mim a beleza está ligada à autenticidade. Acredito que a verdadeira beleza reside na confiança, na expressão genuína e na valorização de quem somos individualmente. Eu cresci sem grandes elogios em relação à beleza, habituada a ouvir pessoas chegadas a serem mais elogiadas tinha no meu íntimo que não tinha nascido para ser bonita mas sim para atrair as pessoas de outra forma, pela minha personalidade e musicalidade.
Mas foi importante encontrar um equilíbrio saudável entre cuidar da aparência externa e cultivar uma conexão positiva com a minha própria identidade. Não ficar nesse lugar de aceitação ajudou-me muito na autoconfiança, hoje tendo mais cuidado com a aparência sinto-me uma mulher muito mais segura.
ZOOT: Quais são alguns dos seus rituais essenciais de beleza, como seus produtos favoritos, perfumes ou práticas que ajudam a manter sua aparência e bem-estar geral? Qual é a sua rotina diária de beleza?
Bia: O perfume é para mim uma parte super importante na minha rotina diária, não consigo sair de casa sem perfume é aquele cheiro que marcará a memória olfativa de quem me encontrar.
Eu uso o mesmo há anos, Dolce & Gabbana “The one”, sou muito esquisita em relação a perfumes e normalmente não compro para experimentar, tem de ser alguém próximo a apresentar-me o cheiro. apaixonei-me recentemente por um perfume da Marc Jacobs “Decadence” há mais de 10 anos que não usava outro perfume até encontrar este, infelizmente já não tem nem uma gota e nunca mais encontrei um lugar que o vendesse.. continuo então com o “The one”
A nível de rotina o perfume é o produto que eu sou mais leal, não uso produtos específicos estou sempre a experimentar coisas novas. Acho importante a nível de maquilhagem usar sempre uma boa base, mas de resto gosto mesmo de experimentar produtos que trago de outros países.
ZOOT: Como é a sensação de ser a musa para esta editorial? Você pode descrever a experiência de ser a inspiração por trás do conceito criativo? E houve algo que aconteceu de forma diferente do que você esperava?
Bia: Ser a fonte de inspiração por trás de um conceito criativo, é uma experiência única e empolgante. A Antónia entrou na minha vida na gravação do meu primeiro vídeo-clip para mim foi um dia muito marcante e tivemos logo uma ligação muito forte que tornou esse dia ainda mais único.fazer um projecto destes por consequência a esse primeiro encontro é muito simbólico para mim.
Tudo fluiu de uma forma muito genuína, com toda a gente na mesma frequência, apetecia-me ficar nesse universo ZOOT por mais umas boas horas, a encontrar-me pelo olhar da Antónia e do resto da equipa, senti que estava a reconhecer um lado meu nunca antes procurado.
Foi especial.
ZOOT: Neste editorial, você é a musa e inspiração de Antónia. Você considera alguem como sua própria musa? Como essas pessoas te inspiraram?
Bia: É muito motivador ver uma artista com tanta maturidade como a Antónia se inspirar e encantar pela minha arte. Vê-la tão entusiasmada no set fez-me realmente sentir uma musa..Eu também tenho as minhas musas sim.. A nível artístico a Amy Winehouse foi a minha primeira grande referência, foi ela que me fez descobrir a minha voz.
Outra artista que me inspira é a Beyoncé, essa artista que chega a lugares inalcançáveis. E depois há a musa mais importante de todas, que é a minha Madrinha de Fado, Ana Moura. Ana não me inspira só a nível artístico, ela é uma grande referência de personalidade a alcançar para mim, tem uma postura frente à vida muito admirável tanto a nível pessoal como profissional que é realmente inspiradora para que é próximo e até mesmo para quem não é.
Aprendi coisas com a Ana mesmo antes de a conhecer, a humildade é uma delas. Hoje em dia tenho a sorte de poder dividir todas as minhas conquistas com ela e em momentos de dúvida pedir-lhe opinião, que no caso é uma das poucas que pesa na minha vida.
Acho que uma das escolhas mais importantes da nossa vida é escolher bem as pessoas a quem procuramos opinião, porque elas são parte da tua construção. E a Ana fazer parte da minha faz me sentir muito sortuda.
ZOOT: Você pode compartilhar conosco alguns projetos empolgantes que você tem em andamento e que serão revelados em breve? O que podemos esperar de você em termos de novidades artísticas?
Bia: Tive agora a gravar o próximo vídeo-clip, fora de Portugal mas adianto já que com a concepção de maquilhagem da Antónia que apesar de não ter ido esteve por dentro do projecto mesmo à distância!
A música chama-se “VAI VAGUEAR” foi produzida pelo Young Max que está dentro do universo do Afro, eu estava no Rio de Janeiro e ele em Londres quando nós contactámos pela primeira vez.
O Max foi um achado! Uma pessoa muito especial foi o primeiro produtor musical que olhou para mim e quis preservar a minha identidade, ajudar-me a concretizar as ideias que tinha guardadas há anos, sem medo algum, sinto-me feliz com o que vem por aí!
