POULTRY POETRY AT DIREKTORENHAUS, BERLIN

"Die Orb"

Berlin’s acclaimed Direktorenhaus Gallery now presents the trance-like artwork of Swiss artist duo Husmann Tschäni in an exhibition entitled ‘Poultry Poetry’ which opens next Thursday 1st September and runs until 31st March 2012.

"Goat Cave"

The installation runs through several rooms of the Direktorenhaus building, featuring large, exquisite illustrations and paintings behind acrylic glass which are adorned with an outburst of feathers and colours, as well as a selection of costumes and fabric sculptures transformed from mere “left-overs” of recent performances giving a unique theatrical presence to the exhibition.

The artists Pascale Mira Tschäni and Michel Husmann Tschäni combined their somewhat incompatible artistic styles back in 2003 and have since developed a unique collaborative artistic language which allows them to still maintain their own individual styles. Their working process moves backwards, starting from painting in layers on the reverse of acrylic glass and using a whole hoard of different materials, from enamel and oils to glitter, crayon and spray.

At the cornerstone of the exhibition space there features a 13-metre long hair-tail which imaginatively sets the surrealist tone of the artists and leads off into a walk-in installation of fabric ruffles, horsehair, antique interiors, potato sprouts, sequins and pompoms. A cave filled solely with lighting objects and a tented home of fabrics clamped to the ceiling with coloured striped sticks transforms this exhibition from the real world into a similar yet dream-like reality where the visitor will be encouraged to question their perspectives in an environment which seems abstract whilst being constructed from the familiar; where the smallest of details is made visible in each work of art, from microscopic cells and organisms to the gigantically big – and even the invisible – things.
