IADE x ZOOT: Youth Culture

Created in collaboration with ZOOT Magazine and IADE University’s PHOTOGRAPHY AND VISUAL CULTURE course, this project sees 17 photography students capture the mood of the moment. Blending street fashion, identity and youth culture, the images reflect a generation responding to an increasingly complex world and and the spaces we move through.
Words Daniela Abranches
Seventeen photography students from IADE University were divided into four creative teams, each collaborating with an emerging fashion stylist. Supported by Professor Luis Santos and the team at ZOOT Magazine, they developed four fashion stories exploring Portuguese youth culture, street style and the mood of a generation.
Photographed across Lisbon, the projects capture different perspectives on identity, freedom, resilience and belonging, revealing how fashion and visual culture reflect the spirit of contemporary Portugal.
SMILE, YOU’RE ON CAMERA
Caught between surveillance and self-expression: Blending 90s prep and grunge with a raw, deliberately imperfect street-style aesthetic, the story treats vintage, designer and second-hand fashion as expressions of contemporary youth culture. Rooted in concious fashion, it reclaims the past while pointing toward a more mindful future.
Photographed in Moscavide, a residential neighbourhood on the eastern edge of Lisbon, the story unfolds through accidental CCTV footage. Odd angles, shifting light, grain, and distortion become part of the narrative, capturing everyday life in motion. A generation in motion. Seen, unseen, always watched.

Lost & Found
Nothing is truly lost. Just waiting to be found again. Lost & Found explores the stories behind the garments and accessories we choose to wear—whether vintage, second-hand, upcycled, or newly made. Brought together through unexpected discoveries and personal connections, each piece carries its own identity and finds new meaning in combination with others.
The story was photographed at Dona Ajuda in Lisbon, a second-hand and donation-based store where clothing is redistributed and reactivated through new wear. It celebrates fashion as a form of self-expression, where authenticity is defined not by trends, but by attitude, character, and the unique way each look is brought to life. Every piece has a past. Every look rewrites it.

BANCA 41
Photographed at Mercado de Santa Iria de Azóia, in Lisbon’s metropolitan area, Banca 41 explores where fashion meets everyday life. Vintage and second-hand pieces are styled alongside contemporary Portuguese designer fashion, drawing on references to 90s prep and grunge. The result frames circular fashion as immediate, worn, and lived-in.

PÃO, CORPO E VINHO
Reimagining Portuguese tradition through a contemporary lens, the project draws from the emotional world of fado and the relationship between memory, the body, and clothing.
Photographed at Tasca da Bela in Alfama, Lisbon, a traditional casa de fados rooted in the atmosphere of old taverns where fado is performed late into the night, it blends the artistry of cultural heritage with a modern contemporary aesthetic to explore Portuguese identity.
