Backstage at NIUKA OLIVEIRA SS24 at ModaLisboa à la carte

Niuka Oliveira’s journey began in 2015 when she embarked on the Technical Fashion Design course at the Escola Artística e Profissional Árvore. Later, in the year of 2018, she continued her education at Modatex Porto, delving into various facets of fashion and design, while also setting out on a quest to find her unique creative identity. During her student years, she participatied in competitions like Euroskills in Austria, and the Worldskills Competition Special Edition in Finland. In March 2023 she won the Tintex Textiles award at the Sangue Novo competition of ModaLisboa.

Her new collection “Perspective”, is a profound reflection of her journey throughout her creative career. It dares Niuka to challenge the fear of judgment and the internal battles of self-imposed limitations, dismantling notions and uncertainties about her identity and focusing on the confidence to venture into the unknown, embrace fresh perspectives, and view challenges from a different angle. Niuka’s close connection to the production of jersey fabrics at Tintex Textiles allowed her to discern the unspoken messages within the collection.

“Perspective” emerges as a starting point for new approaches and viewpoints, showcasing the designer’s essence of individuality and the personal challenges Niuka takes on. It’s a collection where red predominates, symbolizing rebellion and inner strength, set against a backdrop of neutrals (white, black, and gray). The design features irregular stitches that create wavy lines, demonstrating a refusal to conform. The material’s visual fluidity offers an ethereal quality to the collection, leaving a mark with visually disruptive tears that shatter through conventions while incorporating graphic distortions, shattered glass and mosaic effects.
